A Primer on Interscholastic Sports & Legal Pitfalls in the Current Climate

Description

The presentation will address athletic issues within the context of today’s climate. Focus will be on the interplay between legal and private requirements and prohibitions (i.e. DASA, federal and state anti-discrimination statutes, NCAA regulations and recruiting processes, etc.) and coaching. Audience members will develop a greater appreciation and understanding of the following:
 Distinction between locker room banter and prohibited language/conduct.
 Importance of Athletic handbooks and Codes of Conduct.
 Conflicts between travel and school teams.
 Protecting the school district at the try-out level and the do’s and don’ts of evaluating students with disabilities.
 How much deference coaches have with regard to sport related determinations
