Description
This session will address the re-emerging trend of parents and community members asking districts to remove books or pedagogical materials from the library and/or curriculum. Substantive First Amendment and procedural issues including:
-Legal distinction between removing materials and removing a library book in the decision to remove
-Whose First Amendment rights are implicated
-Ensuring that the district's decision is procedurally sound
-Alternatives to library book removals
-Potential legal challenges if a district either grants or denies a removal request
-Recommendation for district removal policies
